Challenge: Tempered Weather Data in Navigation Systems

Overview

This practical challenge consists of three interactive scenarios that illustrate the potential consequences of relying on tempered or inconsistent weather data in maritime navigation. These exercises are designed to improve situational awareness and analytical skills when encountering weather data discrepancies or suspicious sources. Participants will analyze maritime weather forecast messages from multiple sources, cross-check the accuracy and consistency of meteorological data and also learn how misinformation in weather forecasts can impact navigational decisions. By the end of this challenge, participants will be equipped to critically assess weather data used in Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), NAVTEX, Inmarsat EGC, and SafetyNET messages.

Objectives

  • Understand sources of maritime weather data and their characteristics.
  • Identify inconsistencies or tempering in forecast messages.
  • Learn verification techniques using public and satellite-based services.
  • Recognize potential disinformation tactics affecting route planning.
    •

Instructions

  1. Read carefully the provided materials on resources section.
  2. Read this guide to connect to the remote lab
  3. Complete the interactive tasks based on simulated scenarios.
  4. Use supplementary tools (like www.windy.com or NAVAREA charts) for verification.
  5.
